I disagree that art may un-apologetically, slip thru as being meaningful without a strong idea. While Rothko’s art may appear to be without obvious meaning superficially, one would bet that the artist himself would argue that the strokes, the color, the intent all had a basis in a strong, even argumentative, discourse. It is true that good architecture needs to stand without the general public knowing of, or even caring of, its meaning. But to be truly successful, and to stand up to analysis, art and architecture need to strive for an intellectual basis - otherwise it is merely intuitive and often ego-based schmooze.
